Full-time Summer Discovery Teacher Description

Summary: La Plaza, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit Latino organization, strengthens Central Indiana by advocating and preparing Latino students for educational success and by connecting Latino families to health and social services.

The Summer Discovery Program (SD) is a five-week enrichment program for students entering 1st through 6th grades. It is offered Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm from June 17 – July 19, 2019, at Brook Park Elementary School, 5259 David St, Indianapolis, 46226. This multifaceted program offers academic enrichment in reading and math, physical and health education, visual and performing arts, community service projects, educational field trips, and career exploration to approximately 120 students each summer. Individuals in this full- time teaching position are responsible for providing a safe, educationally stimulating and nurturing environment and teaching developmentally appropriate concepts and skills to elementary school age children.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare lesson plans and activities in the areas of math, English, science, leadership development, community service, and
  • Provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for elementary school age children
  • Direct and supervise interns and volunteers assigned to the classroom
  • Maintain a healthy, clean, safe, stimulating and attractive learning environment for the children
  • Attend and supervise children on field trips
  • Maintain accurate attendance records
  • Complete all evaluation forms including administering pre and post-assessments to document student progress
  • Maintain open communication with parents about progress and behavior of students
  • Attend staff orientation, training, and weekly meetings as scheduled
  • Report to the Summer Discovery Program Coordinator and/or Director of Programs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree, preferably in Education
  • Students in the field of Education who have completed their student teaching experiences, may apply
  • Valid Indiana Teaching License
  • At least 3 years teaching experience preferred
  • Committed, responsible, organized, enthusiastic, and energetic
  • Creativity and flexibility to work in a multicultural setting
  • Knowledge of Spanish is preferred but not required
  • Must submit a favorable criminal history check
